Parent Advisory Council (PAC)

Meeting and Agenda Items

A one hour meeting is held on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00pm in the Grief Point library. It is held to discuss concerns and ways to improve the working environment and enjoyment of learning we all want for our children.

On occasion we have a guest speaker give a 10-15 minute synopsis on a topic we feel is of interest to parents (gifted program, speech therapy, etc). We encourage parents to attend these meetings and learn about all the interesting issues that go into making a school run smoothly for everyone. Any parent or guardian of a child enrolled at Grief Point may submit an agenda item.

The deadline for submission is the 20th of each month.

School Based Teams

Purpose

The school-based team provides a support network to teachers and parents of at-risk and special needs students in the school. Our aim is to enable all students to achieve their individual potential.

The Core team usually consists of the learning assistance teacher, a classroom teacher, a special education teacher, a counselor, an administrator and parents. Other members, if required, may include the district psychologist, the speech and language pathologist, the teacher of gifted students and community agency staff.

Our school based team meets every Tuesday morning from 8:00 - 9:00. Students requiring additional support are referred to SBT by their teachers. Parents are invited to SBT meetings and are encouraged to be part of the problem solving as we attempt to meet student needs.

Learning Enrichment Centre

Learning opportunities in the Learning Enrichment Centre are designed to provide small group intervention or enrichment opportunities and individual support for students requiring modifications or adaptations to the regular classroom curriculum. Activities that extend or enrich the regular classroom program are:

  • Social Skills Groups
  • Social Interaction/Play
  • Counseling
  • Gifted Program
  • Language Arts and Math Skill Program
  • Phonological Awareness Program
  • Speech Therapy

These programs are coordinated through the Learning Enrichment Centre Team.

Grade 7 Leadership Team

The Grade 7 Leadership Team is made up of grade 7 students who volunteer their time to assist other students and help run activities in the school. Some of their activities are:

  • Peer Mediation/Peace Patrol
  • Welcoming Committee
  • Lunch Time Monitors
  • Gym Set-up Crew
  • Computer Monitors
  • House Leaders
  • Library Monitors

These teams will be chosen from a written resume submitted by interested students. The Grade 7 Leadership Team is constantly growing and welcomes you to get involved in helping the younger students.

Fund Raising and Volunteers

The school budget covers a lot of expenses but not the extras. Every year we give each division funds to use towards replenishing classroom books, craft supplies, etc. We cover the cost of the Complex rental for the Christmas Concert, the arena rental for Winter Wonderland skate, computer replacements, and a lot more.

Parent volunteers have been helping in the classroom and on the playground as well as fund raising for years and have the different functions and events running so smoothly that any new volunteers wishing to help will have no problem.

General Procedures

Absent Children/ Call Back Service

When your child will be away from school for any reason give us a call (604 485-2256) and leave a message. This ensures the school knows your child is accounted for.

Call Back is a voluntary program that you sign up for. Should you forget to phone or your child fails to show up for class you will be contacted by a parent volunteer to confirm the child is absent (hopefully, not missing). Failure to make contact at any of the telephone numbers provided will result in the school principal's involvement.

If the line is busy and you think you'll forget to try again then phone the school secretary (604 485-5660), she'll be happy to take your message.

Parent and/or Student Concerns

Sometimes, a parent will have concerns relating to issues, school personnel, other students, parents, or even other individual members of the school community. Sometimes, that parent will not feel sure enough about the concern to bring it to their child's teacher or the school principal. Any member of the PAC can be approached to help provide support and information on resolving the issue. All discussion will be treated as privileged and confidential.

School Agendas

School Agendas will help to keep you organized if you do the following:

  • School Agendas must be used daily by all students in grades 3 - 6;
  • be sure to write your homework assignments in your Agenda each day;
  • encourage your parents to initial your Agenda each day, noting your homework assignments;
  • have your teacher respond to your parents' notes in your Agenda;
  • write down all appointments in your Agenda;
  • use your Agenda for everything that you want to remember to do.

Your Agenda helps you become a responsible student.

Lost And Found

Have a parent or another adult put your name on all your school supplies. If you happen to lose something, check the Lost and Found at the top of the stairs to the change rooms. Unclaimed items will be sent to the Hospital Auxiliary to be used by children in need.

Rules & Regulations

Computer Lab

All students at Grief Point have access to the Computer Lab. Student must sign and return an Acceptable Use Policy before they are allowed access to the computers and lab.

Discipline and Problem Solving

At Grief Point Elementary, we use a three way approach to problem solving and discipline to achieve a safe school:

  1. School Rules - The Grief Point "Be"s
  2. Second Step Program
  3. Discipline Plan

We have generated five school rules that are used to promote positive school behaviour. Our new rules are called the Grief Point "Be"s.

  1. The Grief Point "BE"s
    • Be Kind
    • Be Safe
    • Be Cooperative
    • Be Respectful
    • Be Peaceful
  2. Use The Second Step Program
    • Empathy Training
    • Anger Management
    • Impulse Control
  3. Discipline Plan
    The following behaviors are considered of major concern at Grief Point School. They call for immediate intervention at the administrative level. Parents are notified if students are involved in any of the following behaviors:
    • hitting, kicking, uncalled for physical roughness
    • intimidating behaviour - threats, harassment, verbal abuse
    • throwing objects (rocks, sticks, snowballs, etc)
    • defiance of an adult's instructions
    • damaging or stealing property

All the above behaviors threaten the safety of our school. Help us keep Grief Point school safe by reporting these behaviors.

Medical

Accident Procedures

Minor First Aid (such as ice packs or band aids) is administered at the school. If additional treatment is required, parents will be contacted. If we cannot contact a parent, the Emergency Contact person indicated by the parent will be phoned. Where neither the parent nor the named contact person can be reached, the student will be taken to the hospital for treatment unless the parents have given the school different instructions.
